Start simple: Begin with a basic drill — everyone moves to the safe room when a code word is spoken. Practice this until it becomes automatic. Add complexity: Introduce variables — drill at night, with lights off, or with one family member in a different room. Include communication: Practice calling 911 while moving to the safe room. Use a script: address, situation, number of people, location in the house. Debrief: After each drill, discuss what worked and what did not. Adjust the plan based on observations. Children should feel empowered, not frightened. Frequency: Run basic drills monthly. Full scenario drills quarterly. Adjust based on family feedback and changing circumstances.

Layered security means combining multiple protective measures so that if one layer fails, others remain. Deterrence: Bright motion-activated lighting, visible cameras, and alarm system signage discourage most opportunistic criminals. Perimeter: Locked gates, fences, and landscaping that does not provide hiding spots near entry points. Entry hardening: Solid-core doors, reinforced strike plates, window locks, and security film. These delay intrusion and create time to respond. Interior: Alarm sensors, interior cameras, and a safe room that is pre-staged with a phone, flashlight, and defensive tools if appropriate. Response: An audible alarm, a trained response plan, and clear communication with family members. The goal is to detect, delay, and defend — not to confront unnecessarily.

A safe room is a designated space where family members can retreat during a home invasion. It is not a bunker — it is a prepared position. Location: Choose an interior room with no windows, ideally on the same floor as sleeping areas. A walk-in closet or bathroom can work. Door: The door should be solid-core with a reinforced frame and a quality lock. A doorstop or security bar adds resistance. Supplies: Keep a charged phone (or landline), flashlight, first aid kit, and water in the room. If you keep a firearm there, ensure it is stored securely and accessible only to trained adults. Communication: Pre-program emergency numbers. Know exactly what to tell 911 — address, situation, number of occupants, and that you are in a safe room. Practice: Everyone in the household should know the location and how to secure the door. Practice moving to the room from different starting points in the house.
