Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign and training program created by the American College of Surgeons in response to mass casualty events. It teaches three life-saving skills — applying direct pressure, packing a wound, and using a tourniquet — to anyone willing to learn them. For gun owners specifically, this training closes a critical gap: you carry to protect life, and Stop the Bleed ensures you can preserve it after a shooting, an accident, or any traumatic injury until EMS arrives. The three steps are simple, fast, and proven to save lives.
Three Steps That Save Lives
Apply direct pressure.
Place your hands firmly over the wound and push hard — harder than feels comfortable. Maintaining constant pressure for at least three minutes is the single most effective first response to severe bleeding.
Pack and dress the wound.
For deep wounds where direct pressure alone is not enough, pack hemostatic gauze tightly into the wound cavity and apply a pressure bandage over it. Gideon's class gives you hands-on practice with real trauma supplies until this motion is automatic.
Apply the tourniquet.
For limb injuries with uncontrolled bleeding, a properly applied CAT tourniquet stops blood loss in seconds. You will practice application on both yourself and a training partner until placement and tightening are second nature.
